IN THE KNOW…. Espresso’s in Sag Harbor is closed for Good…I drove past Expresso’s this morning and suddenly felt a sense of loss. Expresso has been a part of the Sag Harbor community for 21 years. A staple in Sag Harbor since 1993, Espresso Italian Market and Grill, has been sold by owners Corrado Paini and Richie Camacho, but the building’s new occupants are yet unknown. Paini and Camacho bought the established store from Robin and Luigi Tagliasacchi in 2005.
Espresso was known for their delicious sandwiches, pastries, and Italian cuisine.
A popular place for the kids in Sag Harbor to go after school to get snacks, a quick and local dining choice for teachers and a place for parents to go in the morning for a cup of coffee or a quick breakfast after dropping the kids off at school. I moved to Sag Harbor in 2001 and I met some of my very good friends that year. We all had daughters in the same grade and we formed our breakfast club, it started with just coffee at Expresso’s then as our children got older the entire group would meet once a month, but still at Espresso’s. Expresso’s has been an intricate part of my Sag Harbor life since I moved here. There are many wonderful memories that I will never forget.
It has been rumored that a Vegan/Gluten Free high-end cafe will be replacing the beloved Italian Sandwiches cafe, but this has not been confirmed. It was mentioned that Iron Chef Bobby Flay was the owner, Bobby Flay is NOT the owner. I am told that the place will be closed for many weeks to do some much-needed renovations….Whatever they choose to replace Espresso’s with, my only hope is that it is priced where the kids can afford it. Good Food is Good Food and if it is healthy, good and reasonably priced the kids will come.
If you are like me and you love those Italian Sandwiches…Cappelletti restaurant on Noyac Road in Sag Harbor is an option and they have my favorite sandwich. Share your memories at Espresso’s? What was your favorite sandwich? My favorite was the Avocado, goat cheese & sun-dried toms with fresh alfalfa sprouts (I always substituted the sun-dried tomatoes for bacon)…..

Sag Harbor, NY:Hamptons Spotlight: Sag Harbor Lends a Helping Hand…Nick and James Dwoskin, residents of Sag Harbor, have just returned from Nicaragua. They had the opportunity to visit the village that is the beneficiary of the money raised by SHINE, Ulwasking. SHINE stands for Sag Harbor in Nicaragua Enterprise. The mission of SHINE is to assist campesinos in rural, Nicaragua to improve their living standards through sustainable development in clean water and sanitation. This project allowed the people and community organizations of greater Sag Harbor to support El Porvenir’s work in the village of Ulwasking, Nicaragua.
In 2010 and 2011 several fundraising events were organized by local Sag Harbor residents, including our own Hamptons Mouthpiece, Vanessa Leggard. Since 2011 there have been a series of mishaps and false starts before completing the Ulwasking project. The original targeted village was unable to secure the source of the water to pump into the community and had hydrology that prevented a simpler well from being dug. After a careful study of Ulwasking and securing the villagers participation in the construction and maintenance of the project, construction began.
Ulwasking is an extremely poor community even by Nicaraguan standards (Nicaragua is the 2nd poorest country in the Western Hemisphere). The population of the village is primarily Miskito Indian, a marginalized indigenous group, similar to the Native Americans in our own country. The Miskitos have their own language and culture. The Spanish conquest only tangentially reached the Miskito population in Eastern Honduras and Nicaragua. For this reason the Spanish language was not adopted by the Miskito. The balance of the village is Mestizo, Spanish speaking of mixed European and Native American decent. Until recently the village was entirely Moskito. The Mestizo have moved to the area seeking better locations for subsistence farming distant from larger more populated areas. Ulwasking is in a remote location on the Northern border directly across the Rio Coco from Honduras. One side of the river is Nicaragua and the other is Honduras. To reach the village they drove eight hours north from Managua to Wiwilli and then floated six hours east on the Rio Coco in a motorized dug out boat similar to a canoe, but longer.
I am pleased to report that thanks to the money raised by SHINE and the planning, coordination and supervision provided by El Porvenir (www.elporvenir.org), an excellent charity on the ground in Nicaragua dedicated to providing sustainable water and sanitation projects to impoverished mostly rural Nicaragua, life has been improved for the residents of Ulwasking.Ulwasking has a new functioning water system that pipes water through a filtration system to approximately thirty faucets distributed throughout the village. These spigots are in relatively close proximity to the villager’s homes. Before the completion of the system the women collected the water for drinking, cooking, washing and sustaining their animals from distant, tainted sources. Ulwasking also now has approximately forty latrines, outhouses. Prior to their construction, there were no latrines in Ulwasking.
The following is a link to a video that describes El Porvenir. El Porvenir (EP) is an international non-profit organization that assists people in rural communities in Nicaragua to improve their living standards through sustainable development in clean water, sanitation, reforestation, and health education.
The people of Ulwasking send their sincere thanks. For more information on how you can help, visit website: (www.elporvenir.org),
Hamptons Eats:Doppio is seeing Double..NYC and Sag Harbor..Greetings Hamptons Mouthpiece readers I visited Doppio Artisan Bistro, in Huntington the Long Island branch of a Greenwich, Connecticut pizzeria-gelateria-trattoria and had a delicious meal which will be opening soon in Sag Harbor… Executive chef Louis Barresi, who co-owns both restaurants with his brother, Joseph, launched the Huntington place with a third partner,Thomas Pescuma. This Bistro is village-cozy, the kind of place that one would see in the West village the food is fresh, tasty, and reasonably price. If you’re in Huntington and are undecided give Doppio a try. Good Italian food and all of their pasta are homemade and cooked in traditional Italian style.
Be sure to make a reservation because the energy is vibrant and a favorite among young families. The place is intimate and I have been told gets very busy on a Friday and Saturday nights. This is the place to go when you’ve been everywhere and need something new and exciting. The atmosphere is great and the service is unparalleled.
Dani Leggard
Dani and I shared with the signature Brick Oven pizza “Doppio” Butternut Squash, Fresh Mozzarella & Pancetta. It was light and savory, satisfied every taste bud, and the crust was thin and crisp.
We also shared some Truffle Parmesan Fries…I was so happy to see this on the menu, and although I had already ordered the pizza I had to taste these truffled fries. I was not disappointed they are delicious.
One would think we would be completely full after the fries and the pizza, but we did not feel full and made room for a pasta dish. We decided to share a dish because the portions were fairly large to share, family style. We had the Fusilli Cartoccio (hand rolled pasta,Porcini mushroom, baby heilom tomatoes, truffle oil, mascarpone cheese) Oh my goodness was this amazing. The sauce made me want to lick the plate because it satisfied my palate and left me feeling wonderful and very satisfied. See for yourself how much was on my plate and this was a shared portion.
Doppio Artisan Bistro is a fine Italian restaurant specializing in artisinal pizza, authentic cuisine, and handcrafted gelato. The menu includes traditional and contemporary dishes in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant has a full bar, and offers brunch specials on Sundays. It offers take out and delivery in addition to dining in. Doppio Artisan Bistro opened in Huntington in 2013.
Doppio Italian Cuisine is coming to Sag Harbor, NY and opening in March. They bought Madison & Main restaurant that was labelled as one of the Hottest places to be in Sag Harbor last summer 2013. Michael Gluckman & Eric Miller sold the Restaurant to the owners of Doppio, LLC in Early December 2013 after only being open for less than 1 year. I spoke with Frank Bono and Tom Pescuma and asked if they would be making major changes at Doppio in Sag Harbor, I was told they would be making minimum changes, since the restaurant is fairly new. I am happy to announce that they will be keeping the bar where it is at because lets face its that is a draw….They will be adding in a Brick Oven Pizza Oven.
DOPPIO will be competing with other Italian Restaurants in Sag Harbor, Concordora, Tutto Il Giorno, Cappelletti Italian Grill and the beloved Il Capuccino Restaurant, Doppio states they will bring a completely different Vibe to Sag Harbor and they are 1 of 4 restaurants that I am aware of in the Hamptons that offer Brick Oven Pizza… the other places to my knowledge are Nick & Toni’s(EH), World Pie(Bridgehampton) Pizzetteria Brunetti (West Hampton).
They plan on being part of the community, the Executive chef Louis Barresi trains every chef that works for Doppio and they pride themselves on the fact that the food taste the same at every restaurant. They will be starting their search very soon for staff at the Sag Harbor location. The West Village location will be opening very soon. We wish them tremendous success and I look forward to ordering that butternut squash pizza again and the Nutella Pizza with Bananas & Strawberries for dessert. I asked if there were plans to open additional locations and lips were tight at this time, so for right now..Doppio is seeing Double..NYC and Sag Harbor locations. Doppio Hudson & Doppio Sag Harbor 2014 newest locations.
The Doppio Restaurants are part of the Timeless Hospitality Group founded by Louis Barresi, Tom Pescuma, and Harry Armon.
Sag Harbor, NY: Pierson/Bridgehampton Varsity Field Hockey Team the NYS Class C 2013 Champions…More than Just a Game To Me
Lady Whalers, 2013 NYS Field Hockey Class C Champions
There are many significant moments we live in our lives that we remember. Our 16th birthday party, our first kiss, the birth of a child, the death of a parent…. a championship game. Our children don’t know it yet because they don’t have the benefit of hindsight but this championship game will be with them for the rest of their lives. For some, it will help to define them as winners. For others it will show them what can be accomplished with hard work and teamwork. Both good lessons that will further their individual pursuits, as they get older.
My take is somewhat different. To me, there is NOTHING as good as team sports. Seeing your teammates in their team sports uniforms invokes such a feeling of unity. If your child is interested and you have the time (what a novel idea) please encourage them to join a sports team. The lessons learned are endless. The inside jokes, the special nod of a head, the telepathy, the bonding of lifelong friendships. These are the things that will move forward, the things that will last. Who knows where it will take them in the future, maybe onto a professional career themselves in hockey, football, rugby, etc. and you’ll be buying their merchandise online, whether that be the carlton merchandise or the Adelaide crows merchandise, who knows what will happen but getting them started is giving them something to think about.
Katherine Matthers, Allura Leggard, India Hemby, Samatha Duchemin, Kasey Gilbride
We often celebrate the captain of the team and the star players. We see them with the ball, in their hand, the bat, the ‘SPEAR’ in their hands and admire their ability to rise above the moment and seize the opportunity to make the big play and win the game. We are in awe of the great coaching and understand that we don’t always know as spectators what is best for the team. The Lady Whalers are blessed to have a few really good players and some great players and it showed on Saturday and Sunday night, November 16th and 17th 2013. We marvel at their resolve.

I want to talk about the team. What we don’t see are the countless hours of practice and rehearsal that goes into making the big play. The repetition, the struggle the ‘bench players’ that push the stars to greatness. I was so excited to watch the young ladies overcome the bad calls, the physical play of very worthy opponents to win but it doesn’t occur without the winning DNA that this TEAM has within their collective body. I am excited for our seniors, for their grit and determination and magnificent play. But they learned it somewhere. Three years ago as many of you know well, Pierson lost an opportunity for a championship to this very same team in a double overtime thriller. This current victory was forged through that loss. The team alumni that lost that game came out to watch and cheer the current team on. Some of today’s stars were on the bench when Pierson lost in 2010.

So I say to everyone, look to the end of the bench and peer into the future. We cannot tell who will be the next star to rise to the occasion to carry the team to victory. What we do know is this. The character of this team was revealed through the struggle. It isn’t what you do when things are going well that says who you are, its how you respond when things go their worst that determines who you are and what you will be. The DNA of the Lady Whalers Field Hockey team is filled with pride, strength, skill, determination, grit and excellence. This DNA runs deep and I am very hopeful for the future. Get your kids to join a team and let their winning DNA improve the fortunes of that team! Go Whalers!
