Suzan “Sujay” Johnson Cook is a Democrat running to represent the people of New York’s 13th Congressional District in the United States Congress, because the people of the 13th District matter, and our diverse, collective voices and values need to be heard in Washington. Dr. Suzan Denise Johnson Cook is a presidential advisor, pastor, theologian, author, activist, and academic who served as the United States Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom from April, 2011 to October 2013 and now she is running for Congress.

Sujay is the daughter of a Harlem schoolteacher and an MTA motorman-turned successful small business owner, Suzan “Sujay” Johnson Cook was raised understanding the importance of service to her community. A native of Harlem and the Bronx and a respected local and national faith leader who served in the administrations of Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton and for three cabinet secretaries, including Hillary Clinton, Sujay’s career has been about bringing people together and lifting them up.

Sujay is also a mother, community leader and advocate for women and families. Sujay believes that the answers to our most pressing challenges will come from the mobilized communities of the Heights, Harlem, Inwood and the Bronx fighting for change and sending a different kind of leader to Washington.

A lifelong resident of Harlem and the Bronx, Sujay understands the unique challenges and opportunities that our families face, including the fact that many of the district’s African-American and Latino residents are finding it more and more difficult to continue to reside and work in the communities which they call home.

When she is elected, her focus will be on the people she serves-not on advancing her own political agenda.

Suzan Johnson Cook is different. Throughout her career in the ministry, a published author and policy advisor to President Clinton and as the first African-American and the first woman to hold the diplomatic post of Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom representing President Obama and former secretary Clinton in dozens of nations around the globe, she has proven herself as a person who brings people together.

In Congress, she’ll fight for the continued growth and progress of the people and families from Harlem, the Heights, Inwood and the Bronx. The 13th District deserves nothing less.

The South Fork Natural History Museum and Nature Center (SoFo), the only state-of-the-art natural history museum on the South Fork of Long Island, over 500 guests attended its 26th Annual Summer Benefit SoFo Celebrates the East End on Saturday, July 11. I will say that it was one of my favorite events thus far and when I left I was almost in a Food Coma because I ate so much, but I could not stop myself because the food was just that Good!!!!

The event raised funds for SoFo’s educational and environmental programming and celebrated the East End’s local visionaries—the artists, chefs, environmentalists, farmers, fishermen, philanthropists and many others that are the heart and soul of the Hamptons. Co-Chairs Top Chef Kerry Heffernan; Susan Rockefeller, who recently released her new documentary, Food For Thought, Food For Life; and Hamptons Magazine Editor-In-Chief Samantha Yanks greeted the guests that included Andy Sabin, Peter Beard, Michael Cinque, Bonnie Comley and Stewart Lane, Michele and Mary Cohen, Honoree April Gornik, Honoree Adrian Grenier, Richie Notar, Toni Ross, Carl Safina, Honoree Willi Salm, Jeff Tarr, and Harris Yulin, among others. Guests danced to the spirited sounds of Nancy Atlas and the Nancy Atlas Project Band.

Guests feasted on signature delicacies created and presented during the 6:00-7:00 pm VIP Cocktail reception by Leading Chefs Colin Ambrose, Estia’s Little Kitchen; Kerry Heffernan, Grand Banks Restaurant; Todd Jacobs, Fresh Hamptons; Matt Ketcham, Ketcham’s Seafarm; Kyle Koenig, Topping Rose House; David Loewenberg and Sam McClelland, The Bell & Anchor; Andrew Schor, East Hampton Grill; Joe Tremblay, Bay Burger; Jason Weiner, Almond; Antico Noè; Swedish Culinary Summer; Brian Halweil, Edible East End; Joe Realmuto, Nick & Toni’s; Karen Rivara, Peconic Pearls; and Jon Snow, Hayground School.

Highlights of the evening include a surprise birthday celebration for Honoree Adrian Grenier, who was presented with a special “salamander” cake by Chef Peter Ambrose, and a special tribute which included a presentation of engraved Chefs Knives by Korin Japanese Tableware & Chefs Knives to the Food Champions and Chefs who donated a special tasting menu and their services to benefit the Museum. The 7:00 – 9:30 PM gala reception featured farm-to-table and sustainable seafood hors d’oeuvres catered by Peter Ambrose, an Honoree presentation, a Platinum and Silent Auction, and dancing. Alcohol was kindly donated by Amagansett Wines & Spirits, and wine was donated by Channing Daughters Winery.

The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company LLC announced today that it has entered into an agreement with The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company to acquire 25 A&P stores in Greater New York for $146 million. The agreement relates to the following stores: Waldbaums in both East Hampton and Southampton, 9 in total, 14 Patohmarks and 2 A&P’s throughout New York and New Jersey

The agreement is subject to further terms and conditions set forth therein and subject to court approval in A&P’s bankruptcy case filed on July 19, 2015, which include the potential of a subsequent auction under which other higher bid or bids could be received and accepted by A&P for these stores. The agreement is also conditioned on regulatory requirements, including expiration of the applicable waiting period under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act of 1976.

Upon completion of the transaction, Stop & Shop plans to convert these Waldbaum’s, Pathmark and A&P stores into Stop & Shop stores. Additional details regarding the conversions will be announced at a later date. The sale is currently expected to close within the second half of 2015.

TRINITY runs from July 23 to August 13,2015

Christopher Engel’s newest work is inspired by a personal connection to the teachings and writings of CG Jung. At the age of fifteen, an apartment fire took away most of Engel’s possessions, forcing him to live in his parents New York City theater where he discovered the book “Man and His Symbols” by Jung. This experience set him on his path as an artist and as an art therapist.

Jung’s philosophy of the collective unconscious resonates throughout Engel’s work – a connection to the archetypal symbols of humanity, from our ancestors to our predecessors.

The title of his newest show at Romany Kramoris Gallery, comes from his painting “Trinity.” A memory of being in Washington Square Park as a child, observing three whimsical figures who seemed to have transcended time and were reminiscent of Medieval entertainers – jesters, magicians, musicians – is depicted in the foreground. The symbolism of the “trinity” has strong mystical and spiritual connotations in cultures throughout history and the world, including Buddhism, Hinduism, and Christian theology. These figures as well as those depicting other trios in Engel’s newest series – three kings, carnival performers, musicians – call to mind these cultural and spiritual icons.

Also included in this show is “City Shaman,” which calls to mind the Assyrian wall reliefs. We see the depiction of one figure embodying three beings, once again emphasizing the significance of the “trinity.”

Engel states, “My work attempts to capture images of the archetypal origins of myth and to draw the viewer into a connection and communication with ancient spirits, the metaphysical, the sacred, the holy, and the transcendent. These images portray the archetypal heroes and heroines that exist in the past, present and future all at the same moment. These images have appeared throughout history – in the first marks of our ancestors, on cave walls, on trees, in the sand – messages that though we are only passing through this life momentarily, we each are a part of something that never ends. I venture to record these images as a map for exploration – to show patterns, to chart the sub-conscious, to leave a record of this journey.”
