Is cheaper better? …Apparently yes, according to Consumer Reports the BEST sunscreens for 2013 are some of the most inexpensive lotions on the market. Wearing Sunscreen is vitally important if you would like to protect your skin from Melanoma. Sunscreen should actually be worn all year to protect the skin from sun damage. Many dark-skinned people do not think they  need to wear sun-protection, but my friends those black spots on your skin are not moles they are sun damage, you too are not immune from skin cancer. Many people come to the Hamptons during the summer and just bake in the sun. I find no fun in baking in the sun, however if this floats your boat, then make sure you are doing everything you can to protect your skin. Listed below are the 6 BEST and most productive sunscreen products to protect your skin.bigstock-Two-Chairs-Banner-3413249

Consumer Reports: If you sunburn in 20 minutes without sunscreen, an SPF 30 product should protect your skin for about 10 hours (20 minutes times 30). In addition retinoids, part of the vitamin A family and an inactive ingredient in some sunscreens, have caused an increase in skin cancers in mice. There’s also a risk of birth defects in people taking oral acne medications containing retinoids, though they differ from the retinoids in sunscreens. As a precaution, pregnant women may want to choose a sunscreen without the ingredient retinol or retinyl palmitate. For more information and result information click here:

Consumer Reports  BEST results are these 6, and they will not break your pocketbook this summer…

  • Target Up & up sport spf 50, $5-$11
  • Equate ultra protection spf 50 $5-$10
  • Coppertone water babies 50 lotion, $7-$12
  • Walgreens Spray sport SPF50, $8-$15
  • Hawiian tropic sheer touch SPF 30 $5-$10
  • Copper tone sport high performance SPF 30 $8-$12

Tips from Consumer Reports

Use sunscreen properly and get the most protection from the sun, follow these tips:

  • Put sunscreen on 15 to 30 minutes before your head out into the sun. Most creams take more than 30 seconds to rub in.
  • For lotions, use at least 2 to 3 tablespoons to cover your body. For sprays, apply as much as can be rubbed in, then repeat.
  • Reapply all sunscreen, regardless of its SPF, every 2 hours and again after you swim or sweat, since sunscreen can rub off or wash off during the day. (Some leave a residue on skin. Most sunscreens left stains that didn’t wash out of cotton, polyester, and rayon/spandex.)
  • Limit your time in the sun, and if possible, wear protective clothing, a hat, and sunglasses.
  • Check the expiration date. The FDA requires manufacturers to provide an expiration date or show that a product will remain stable (but not necessarily maintain its SPF) for at least three years. If you buy an undated sunscreen, mark the purchase date on the container and, to be prudent, toss it once it’s two years old.
  • Don’t store sunscreen in a hot car—it may degrade faster. And skiers take note: Once frozen, sunscreens may lose effectiveness.

(Sag Harbor, NY) Getty Gas, The Price is Right!.….Greetings Hamptons Mouthpiece readers, there is new ownership at the Getty Station in Sag Harbor and finally competitive gas prices in Sag Harbor. Could my eyes be deceiving me! I could not believe the price of $3.89 at the GETTY Station in Sag Harbor when it appeared on my cell phone, I had to get into my car to drive there to confirm this price. Could it be that Sag Harbor was no longer going to be known as having the most expensive gas in the Hamptons!

I stopped to speak with the new management today and was told that they want to be part of the community and their rates will be competitive with the gas stations in Watermill and Bridgehampton not Harbor Heights on Rte 114. They are currently offering  low introductory prices to draw in the community, now that is smart.

What a welcomed relief to know that I can fill-up in Sag Harbor without having to drive all the way to Bridgehampton or Hess in Watermill going forward. We now need to get Harbor Heights on-board because their rates continue to be out of control and only if you are desperate do you stop there for gas.

Date: 5/16/13

HARBOR HEIGHTS: $4.379

GETTY: $3.899Hamptons Mouthpiece

Thank You Getty, we hope you continue on this path of offering the residents and visitors competitive gas prices in Sag Harbor, welcome to the community. Getty Gas, The Price is Right!

As always Hamptons Mouthpiece keeping you in the know!!!

(Southampton, NY) The Southampton Inn a perfect getaway stay.…Greetings Hamptons Mouthpiece Readers, the start of the summer in the Hamptons will be here in less than 12 days and the East End will be filled with people from across the globe vacationing in the Hamptons. Memorial Day symbolizes the beginning of the Summer season, lets just hope we will get the warm weather. This is really up to Mother Nature, she seems to be full of humor lately, teasing us with 80 degree weather one day and the next day it’s freezing with a frost advisory.Flower_with_Inn

I had the pleasure to take a tour of the Southampton Inn a month ago and  although I have been there many times I was unaware of all the amenities that the Inn offers its guests. Unlike many of the other hotels in the Hamptons, the Southampton Inn is a premiere travel destination stay that is centrally located in the heart of Southampton village and walking distance to the one of the Hampton’s Voted best beaches in America, Coopers Beach. The Southampton Inn is located in Southampton Village on the East End of Long Island, New York on five acres of manicured lawns and landscaped gardens. ThisTudor-style Inn is open year round, is a local landmark and the choice hotel for thousands of visitors who travel to the South Fork of Long Island and the Hamptons each year. The Inn welcomes guests looking for a Long Island getaway, a long-awaited vacation in the Hamptons, a romantic weekend, a family gathering or corporate retreat. Unique stores and boutiques, museums, art galleries, quaint and upscale dining and endless entertainment. During the summer, the Inn provides complimentary shuttle service to beautiful Cooper’s Beach. The staff  can coordinate restaurant reservations, fishing trips, surfing lessons, golf tee times, bicycle rentals, tours of local museums, and visits to historic sites and wineries..man-and-woman--riding a bike

The Kids Room is equipped with a Television, DVD player, video games, ping pong table and ice cream. What I liked is the kids room is located next to the outdoor patio. If the kids get bored being in the pool and you are not ready to leave the child/children can go into the kids room and hang out there for a while.  The Southampton Inn welcomes pets too so you don’t have to leave your family pet behind?playroom1

Music Under The Stars
Every Wednesday this summer enjoy a free concert at Agawam Park or Coopers Beach, presented by the Southampton Cultural Center. All shows start at 6:30pm-8:30pm.IMG_0033_250

July 10: Hambone Thyme -Agawam Park
July 17: Matt Daniel -Agawam Park
July 24: The Precisions -Agawam Park
July 31: Project Vibe -Coopers Beach
August 7: Jonny Hirsch -Agawam Park
August 14: AdLib Steel Orchestra -Agawam Park
August 21: New Life Crisis -Agawam Park
August 28: Vivian and the Merrymakers -Agawam Park

Although my tour was given on a cold day, the beauty of the property was just as beautiful had it been a warm summer day. The landscaping is exquisite and yet relaxing, the outdoor pool patio is furnished with a 50 foot pool that is 3-4 feet deep, an outdoor bar, tennis courts and a garden of which they grow their own herbs and tomatoes. The Outdoor seating is perfect for a cocktail party that is an option, just call the Inn to get available dates and rates. The banquet room is available for rental year-long and what makes it very special is it has its own private entrance.southampton Inn Pool

Corporate:

  • The Southampton Inn is the perfect place for companies to hold  board meetings, only 40-60 minutes from the Islip airport, can accommodate up to 80 people.
  • Training classrooms for up to 45 people
  • customized packages for corporate retreats (that could include but not limited to vineyard visits, deep-sea fishing, beach parties)
  • WiFi access

Rooms:

The rooms are cozy and warm, feels like home, the beds are Tempur-Pedic mattresses
Southampton Inn King size bed room

The Southampton Inn is unlike many Hamptons hotels and Inns, they are open year-round and a staple in the community. During Hurricane Sandy, they opened their doors to misplaced victims and provided them with an opportunity to take showers and have something warm to drink and eat. Many areas in the Hamptons were hit hard by Sandy and many workers were here working 24 hours non-stop, The Southampton Inn provided these workers with a place to stay.Courtyardnight at the Southampton Inn

The Inn offers many services to the Local community as well:

  • Pool & Tennis membership for $2000 for a family of 4.
  • Breakfast & Lunch are served 730am-730pm
  • Lunch can be enjoyed on the lawn
  • meeting rooms
  • Library
  • Banquet Hall
  • Private Parties

lobstersalad @ Oso restaurantOso Restaurant is located within the Inn is open 730am-730pm, serving breakfast & lunch.

One of the amenities that I found interesting is that the Inn allows anyone to “Rent your own Restaurant” perfect if you would like to host an event and bring in your own caterers. Room service is available, you can have it sent to your room or you have a choice to have OSO TOGO and enjoy your meal sitting on the lawn and watching the sunset.

This is a very nice place to stay with a variety of amenities, a perfect arrangement for those not seeking to rent a home. Great for families seeking a weekday stay, weekend get-away or a 1-2 week vacation. Please contact the Hotel for rates and availability www.southamptoninn.com

INNOVATIONS IN THEATRE EDUCATION

This award recognizes the efforts of a school that goes above and beyond to support exceptional theatre arts education. This year,Bridgehampton High School is being recognized for its production of “A Night on Broadway: A Musical Revue,” which was a non-book musical written, performed and produced by its students and volunteer staff. This is the first theatrical production in the school, and, we hope, will be the first of many.
