Hamptons Eats…Are you in the mood for a Hamptons Greek cuisine? Greetings Hamptons Mouthpiece Readers…last week I had the pleasure to dine at 2 Greek Restaurants in the Hamptons. I have always liked greek food and I wanted to try out these two restaurants, one is in Southampton and the other in Bridgehampton, both owned by the same corporation. Nammos Estiatorios  & Old Stove Pub serves authentic Greek and Mediterranean cuisine in Southampton, NY and  Bridgehampton, NY. Before visiting both restaurants I usually rely on Yelp to guide me, I like to see what others have to say, since the price for 2 people to eat out at a restaurant in the Hamptons usually averages in the price range of over $100. My thought process is, if I am going to go out and spend money I want to get my money’s worth. Unfortunately the reviews were somewhat disappointing, but since friends of mine had shared their experiences with both places I chose to ignore the reviews and I am happy I did.

Last Wednesday, July 24th I visited Nammos in Southampton, NY with my foodie teenager Allura. Nammos is 2 years old and previously was occupied by the popular Nello’s. Nammos Southampton serves authentic Greek and Mediterranean Seafood cuisine and the chef I am told, is an award-winning Greek Chef Emmanouil Aslanoglou. We arrived very early before 6pm, the average time that many Hamptonites typically go out for dinner is after 7pm, but we had plans and I usually eat before 7pm. The place was very quiet with few diners at this time, our waitress was very kind and knowledgable of the menu and the history behind the restaurant.

We start with Pikilia a sampling of  DSC_1338six homemade traditional Greek Spreads..Tarama, Tzatziki, Skordalia, Green Pea Hummus, Melitsanosalata….our favorites were the Pink caviar, the Feta with red onions & the traditional Greek yogurt spread.

We decided to try the Htenia (spicy pan roasted scallops with black truffle and cretan yogurt macaroones pasta) & Fried Calamari …We loved the spicy scallops but did not care for the Fried calamari, it lacked seasoning.

We were full from the spreads and the starter dishes and rushed because Allura had rehearsal at 730pm so we chose to order only one entrée, and Emilios suggested that we try the Lavaraki (loup de Mer, Mediterranean Sea Bass, Lean, sweet flavor) with a side order or Seasoned Lemon garlic Potatoes…I have to say the fish was very light, but it was just ok, I thought it could have used a little more seasoning, we absolutely did not care for the lemon garlic potatoes, I do think those might be an acquired taste. DSC_1345

Overall our dining experience at Nammos in Southampton, NY was delightful  and the manager Emilios Eliades and his staff were attentive and very kind. I would have loved to try dessert, but our time was limited, next time because I think it would be fun to go back with friends to have those greek spreads again. We really liked them!

managerOLD STOVE PUB: After visiting and dining at Nammos in Southampton I was anxious to dine at the  sister place in Bridgehampton, called the Old Stove Pub. I have passed this restaurant several times and yet never bothered to dine there, but I wanted to do a comparison since I was told it too was a Greek restaurant. I went with my friend Helen, unfortunately the weather was yucky and we could not enjoy the outdoor dining that I am told is so beautiful. The night before, a friend had raved about his wonderful meal at the Old Stove Pub, so although the reviews on YELP were discouraging I was looking forward to dining there.

old stove pubUnlike Nammos that had a new youthful, Southampton look, Old Stove Pub has a more rustic feel. It was cozy and comfortable. George Gounelas the Manager was very attentive and although I liked the food at Nammos, I had a better dining experience at Old Stove Pub. I am shocked to read what some wrote about their dining experience because I had the complete opposite experience. 1000116_10201019819672161_220457121_n

I am ashamed to share with all of you what two women ate for the night, it was just shameful and we were so full that we needed someone to roll us to the car, just kidding…. I was so full that I could not eat anything until late afternoon the next day. Spanakopita,

  • We started with Spanakopita, baked Spinach, leeks, Scallions
  • Feta cheese, Crispy Phillo, Greek Salad, Organic Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Onions, peppers, barrel aged Dodonis Feta
  • Shrimp Tourkolimano, large Shrimp with tomato sauce and feta cheese baked in a casserole (this one I did not care for that much)
  • Saganaki, Greek Cheese baked in a Casserole with lemon juice and Olive oil
  • Entrée: Lavraki…European Bass, Lean, sweet flavor, with capers, herbs and lemon oil sauce
fish
  • Classic Steak….(Helen loved it and said it was the best steak she had in a long time,)..with a side order of Melitzana Papoutsaki, roasted Eggplant with tomato-onion and feta cheese..I loved this hint of spice…969758_10201019823392254_1659595918_n

We ended our meal with a delicious dessert, Loukoumades…Greek handmade donuts with spicy honey, cinnamon sugar, vanilla ice cream ,these donuts are a piece of heaven… So my friends after dining at both Greek Restaurants, for me my favorite was the Old Stove Pub. It was more relaxed, the Manger was more attentive, the service was quick and the food was amazing. donuts

I think Nammos is the place to go if you are going with a group of friends, the serving sizes are meant for a group like setting and it has a youthfulness with a beautiful outdoor dining area. It seems to me that younger people would appreciate this place slightly more than the Old Stove pub which does attract a slightly older clientage. What’s interesting is Nammos has a website and Old Stove Pub does not, that speaks of the age difference.

When I arrived at The Old Stove Pub around 630pm the place was very quiet with many open tables, when I left after 8pm, almost every table was full. The customers were slightly older and many of them were return customers. I find that older customers go out for a fantastic dining experience and judge the food and the service. Younger people under the age of 45 tend to judge a restaurant not just on food but entertainment as well. I however prefer the food and the service…ooops am I telling my age?

Nammos is located @ 136 Main Street, Southampton, NY http://m.mainstreethub.com/nammos

Old Stove Pub is located 3516 Montauk Highway, Bridgehampton, NY 11932 Both restaurants are in the same price range. Nammos is only open for the Season and Old Stove Pub is open year round.

Hamptons Happenings…The Hamptons 9

On Sunday, July 21st, 2013 while Kurt and I were recovering from the previous day’s events including a birthday party for Kurt in which his friends roasted him for being as old as dirt; the last thing we wanted to do was to get involved in any project. We were looking forward to a day of doing nothing, absolutely NOTHING.

Two guests remained, having stayed the night and we were enjoying some coffee and our daughters continuing to pillage Kurt with ‘old man’ jokes, when our friend received a call at about 11:00am, just when Stephanopoulos was going off. We were all a little alarmed when we overheard the concern in her voice. We heard her shout”…Oh, no!!! They did what????” She had gotten all our attention as we listened in. Our friend appeared shaken as she entered the living room. She could barely contain her emotions as she was visibly angry and looked like she wanted to scream.

Our friend had just gotten a call from her daughter who told her that when celebrating a friend’s birthday with 8 other friends the previous Saturday night July 20th, they had been rebuffed by the security detail outside of the Georgica Restaurant and Lounge in Wainscott, Ny, being told that they couldn’t go inside. Now having frequented a number of clubs myself, I knew that sometimes, without a contact, reservation or being born into royalty you will have a hard time getting into some of these venues in the Hamptons. That’s just how it is. But this is where this thing swings completely out of control.  The 9 girls were allegedly told by the security that the reason they couldn’t get in was “a colored thing”.’ SAY WHAT???? The girls are African American.

According to the girls, the security intimated that if it was up to him, he would have let them in but he was following orders. He was saying this in hushed tones as a manager (a white man) was looking on from a short distance, apparently to insure that the message had been delivered. The girls were inconsolable. Whipped, tarred, feathered, defeated and turned away. Because of their youth and inexperience with dealing with this type of behavior they choose, perhaps the best option and walked away. They did question the statement of the bouncer to identify that he had indeed said what he said. At first he tried to deny it but when the group insisted that he had indeed uttered that ‘…it’s a colored thing’ remark; he relented and agreed that he had said it. This did not change the dynamic, if anything it only infuriated the girls more. They choose the best course in this matter. Their intelligence and good sense told them to walk away without creating a scene. This was a good idea given how sometimes things spiral out of control and law enforcement is tasked with having to make judgments that may be disproportionate to the circumstance. Walking away was not easy for them.

When the girls left the club they were crest fallen, confused and disillusioned. The veneer of the Hamptons had been stripped away and the bitter pill they were being forced to swallow had only just begun to impact them. Their evening of friendship, sisterhood and plain old fun was ruined, no… destroyed.

Kurt and I had an opportunity to speak with the owner of Georgica, Antonio Fuccio, on Monday night, July 22, 2013 who had just drove in from Brooklyn and was gracious enough to make himself available to speak to us. He wanted to view the video we had taken of the young women speaking of their experience on Saturday night. After viewing this 30 minute video, he seemed upset when one of the young ladies indicated that the bouncer  said” I would let you in if it were up to me but it’s a color thing”.

Mr. Fuccio’s response at first was defensive and he began to say that this was a gross miscommunication and his establishment has never been accused of racial discrimination. He indicated that he has been a reputable business in the community for several years and is the only nightclub that has never had an issue with over-crowding. I wanted Mr. Fuccio to have an opportunity respond to these allegations.

He says they have never had a violation, but admitted that they are probably the only place that has a complicated policy of getting into the club. He indicates that it is the policy of the club that you make a reservation on Friday and Saturday nights. The club is small and the maximum number of people that can be in the club is 299, so to maximize on the space is to only allow reservations. He indicates that it is a one bottle minimum, but if it is really busy then it could be a cost to the table. Mr. Fuccio told his bouncer while we there that if someone had explained to the ladies that it was a $300 minimum bar requirement to enter he is sure these ladies would not have blinked an eye and would have paid it. The bouncer stated the ladies were told  this and they had a problem with the cost. He stated the ladies questioned “why do we have to pay this amount if we were here already this evening”?  I interjected and said, according to their statement they were never told  about this policy.

After spending over an hour with Mr. Fuccio he seemed genuinely upset and surprised, and asked if he could have a copy of the video, he wants to use this as the training video for what should NEVER happen. He was extremely upset with his staff and the possible mistaken impression people could have of the policies and ethics of his establishment. Mr. Fuccio offered to issue a letter of apology to the ladies and extend an invitation to invite the ladies back, although he doubted they would accept.

He apologized for the staff not handling it correctly. He said he was embarrassed and this is not how he runs his business. Although this was a difficult conversation, he was patient and very open in discussing this very difficult situation. I do however think his staff needs additional training and I do believe that whoever was in charge, prejudged these young women and assumed they were not going to be spending sufficient money.

The hostess had a responsibility to tell the girls of the table requirement, yet this was not done but I am told it was not her job to tell them. Well, whose job was it? I feel the restaurant should be more forthcoming with their late night entry policy, with regards to reservations on Friday and Saturday nights, because the website does not indicate this information.

It is my hope that Georgica and other places in the Hamptons learn from this. It is the niteclub’s perogative to allow in who they want.  They have the right to maintain their  exclusivity, the other stuff has no place. The question is however; why were these young women the only people left standing outside?

Some background information is in order. These young women of color are all college graduates from the finest schools in the land. From Hillary Clinton’s alma mater Wellesley College, as well as UPenn, Howard University, Boston College and other elite schools. These Black women hold positions as diverse as research analysts at a renowned east coast research hospital to a marketing strategist in a fashion house. These women are no country bumpkins or riff raff. These young Black women are educationally prepared and contributing members of our society. You get my drift. These ladies did everything right. They were going out on the town in the Hamptons and realizing they could be at risk, engaged a limousine to take them to every venue they wanted to go to. They were and are smart. You’ll forgive me for calling them girls because they remind me of my daughters. THEY ARE MY DAUGHTERS!!!! That’s why this is personal.

My oldest daughter could have just as easily been one of this crew. Ready to hang out in the Hamptons. Our friend has a home in the Hamptons, so her daughter has been raised in the Hamptons, knows this place. They choose this club because they knew the party was happening there, only just not for them. We only hope it was not because of the gift of more melanin in their skin. When our friend related this incident, we immediately knew that these young women had to be given the opportunity to tell their story. We decided to videotape their words. Only they would be able to chronicle this calamity, what they viewed as racism. Yeah, I said it. That’s what it is folks. Now I’m not that delusional to think that some of you will say and swear that this is not the case and you are entitled to your fantasy. But the reality that these young women were exposed to, sometimes lurks just around the bend. I am certain that the bouncer spoke out of turn but I am just as certain that in many clubs, perhaps not this one, the implicit but unspoken directive is to limit access to ‘too many’ minority faces in these establishments. It is OK to have the ‘hired help’ strategically placed to give a sense of inclusion but the true question is, who do you allow through the front door?

These beautiful, intelligent young women, who, if you closed your eyes and wished upon a star, you would want your daughter to grow up to be just like them, regardless if you were white, black, yellow, red or brown. Having spoken to them, it only added to my own hurt and frustration in my inability to make it better. It made me cry. I just couldn’t help myself.

Well, we taped them and they laid bare about all the hurt and pain they have suffered as a result of this nonsense. The girls have asked us to wait before releasing the video. They are worried, and perhaps with good reason, as to the known and unknown impacts that the notoriety of this video may cause to current and future employment opportunities. In this day of social media, it is an unpleasant byproduct of the medium. Corporate America may see these vital young women as trouble, based on their encounter with what perceived as racism and further violate them with censorship and employment opportunities unrealized.

And that would be a shame. Hamptons Mouthpiece, “we do the talking for you”

Sag Harbor, NY” Hamptons Happenings…Live Music at Madison & Main on Thursday’s during Happy Hour. Madison and Main opened in April 2013 and in a short time has become Happening place to be in the Harbor. Happy Hour is favorite among the local community and is increasingly attracting people from all over the Hamptons. I love  going on Thursday nights because the very talented duo Lilly Anne Merat & Forrest Gray are the talented hired for the summer months. There is a soulful vibe that I really enjoy. I sit at the bar, chatting singing along and drinking my Watermelon Martini.  I love this drink and I am such a Watermelon Martini snob…I am that customer that would her drink back if it is not made to perfection. Madison & Main got it going on in this department….The bartenders are fantastic, they are personable, approachable & super talented with mixed drinks…each of these bartenders on any given night can make a really smooth Watermelon Martini…So if you are ready for a very energetic and lively atmosphere, stop by Madison & Main on a Thursday night and enjoy the tunes of Lilly & Forrest and the BEST HAPPY HOUR IN TOWN….

This event will be joined by country music sensation Colton James, and folk music star Caroline Doctorow & MariGrace Dineen. They will be performing at the outdoor stage at Gosman’s famous seafood dock on Saturday night, July 27, from 5 to 9 p.m. The outdoor concert is free. On both days, Brooks and Sean Paxton, A.K.A. “the Shark Brothers,” will provide exciting informational and educational forums under the tent at Montauk Marine Basin. Brooks and Sean directed the Guy Harvey Ultimate Shark Challenge in Florida, another shark conservation fishing tournament. The public will hear a plea for shark preservation from Scott Curatolo Wagemann, a Cornell Cooperative Extension scientist and shark attack survivor! Booths under the tent will host the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, OCEARCH, and the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation. It’s all for the public to better understand the vital work that these organizations are doing to bring back the large sharks and other species that once flourished in our waters. Four sharks will receive satellite-tracking tags during the two-day all release tournament. Three anglers will name three sharks. The 6th Grade class at the Montauk school will name a fourth. The public will then be able to follow these fish online via OCEARCH Global Shark Tracker, the most-followed shark tracking site and app in the world — provided free of charge! Dave Bofill Marine and White Water Marine will provide chase boats with the scientists to tag the sharks. And Mustad — the best-selling hook on the planet — will provide circle hooks. The Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation is providing $10,000 in cash prizes and renowned artist April Gornik has donated an original work of art for the winner. In addition to the boat team competition, the public can be in the action as an official Tournament Observer.

Shark’s Eye Background

Today the great apex predators of the ocean face extinction, and so do the charter boat captains who catch them. That’s why Carl Darenberg, owner of Montauk Marine Basin, artist April Gornik, and the Concerned Citizens of Montauk, working with the Montauk Boatmen, Inc., the Montauk Chamber of Commerce, Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, OCEARCH, the Shark Brothers, and Mote Marine Laboratory are proud to present Shark’s Eye.All sharks caught in this tournament are released and only circle hooks are used. Eligible mako, thresher and blue sharks are fitted with satellite tracking tags, which monitor their movements after release. The anglers who catch them get to name three tagged sharks, and a fourth is named by Montauk school children. The public is able to follow these fish online via the OCEARCH Global Shark Tracker.

In 1951 a young Frank Mundus settled in Montauk and got the idea to offer charter fishing for sharks. Nobody paid much attention to him. But by the time Mundus and team harpooned a 4500 pound great white, in 1964, anglers were paying serious attention, as well as a writer named Peter Benchley. The movie “Jaws” was released in 1975 and everybody wanted to come to Montauk to go Monster Fishing for sharks. Big money tournaments started to take hold.

Cut to the late 1990’s, when disturbing videos started to appear. Sharks were shown being finned alive by foreign commercial fishermen. They were being killed not by the thousands, but by the millions, to provide fins for shark fin soup for the growing Asian market. Shark populations started to decline, and by the mid 2000s were no longer sustainable.

To ensure a highly competitive, exciting and informative event for both anglers and the general public, in addition to satellite tagging of certain fish, a system of best practices and modern catch and release protocols have been engineered into this tournament format to maximize the post-release welfare and survivability of all sharks caught during this competition. These methods include the mandatory use of inline circle hooks to help prevent internal hooking, heavy tackle and line strengths to reduce a shark’s time on the line, and other specific handling procedures designed to ensure angler safety and healthy shark releases. Anglers and Observers will receive personal training on these methods, prior to competition.

All profits from the two-day event will go to the Montauk Boatmen (MBI), the Montauk school, the Montauk Chamber of Commerce and the Concerned Citizens of Montauk (CCOM).
