On this anniversary of 9/11, I’m reminded how easily we get wrapped up in things that truly don’t matter. We hold onto anger with loved ones. We sweat the small stuff. We assume tomorrow is guaranteed. It isn’t. Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff. Be Grateful.

September 11, 2001 is a day I will never forget. It was horrific. It is etched into our collective memory and into my own like it happened yesterday. I take comfort in knowing that the innocent lives lost that day will never be forgotten. I still have not visited the 9/11 Museum, but it is on my list the next time I’m in New York City.

All we can really do is live. Fully. Gratefully. Without losing ourselves in things that don’t deserve our energy. Life is a gift, and it should never be taken for granted.

When I first moved to Sag Harbor 17 years ago, I had an 8-year-old and a 2-year-old. Kurt was working in New York City, and I was suddenly in a new place, without friends or family, feeling overwhelmed and alone. I was still commuting to Brooklyn for work that first month.

On the morning of 9/11, I had just dropped Dani off at school and was preparing to drive into Brooklyn with Allura. Kurt called me first because he had just learned that his father was diagnosed with cancer. He was devastated. I talked him through it so he could continue his drive into the city.

About an hour later, he called again and said, “Ness, turn on the news. Do not drive into the city today.”

I turned on the TV and felt frozen. Many of my friends worked in the World Trade Center buildings. A deep, overwhelming grief set in. I am grateful that my friends made it home, but so many parents did not return to their children that day.

Kurt once shared a poem with me called “Just for Today” by Sally Meyer, written from a mother to a child. It stayed with me. It put everything into perspective. It reminded me to slow down. To be present. To appreciate the moments we so often rush past.

Although my children are now grown, 25 and 18, I still catch myself getting wrapped up in work and distractions. I have to remind myself to pause and really listen. To turn off the phone. The television. The computer. When we’re together, we sometimes play a simple board game of Sorry. Phones away. Just being together.

I am deeply grateful for my daughters. There is not a single day that I don’t say thank you for the privilege of raising them, loving them, guiding them, and learning alongside them. They are no longer children. They are women. And I still make time every day to talk to them, to show up, and to share in the things they enjoy.

9/11 reminds us of this truth: tomorrow is not promised. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Say the kind words. Hold the hug longer. Be present.

Life is precious. Let’s live like we know that.

Southampton, NY: Dinner and Cabaret at Southampton Inn at Claude’s was both delicious and very entertaining. I recently dined at Claude’s at the Southampton Inn with my cousin and my daughter, we decided to dine inside and stay for the show. Thursday’s nights is a Prix Fix Dinner from 7-9pm with a Cabaret show starting at 9 pm.
The $75 Prix Fix includes two-course dinner, one glass of house wine & a ticket to the show.
$40 at the door starting at 845pm included one glass of house wine & ticket to the show.

We started with an appetizer Lobster Mando Salad w/ Avocado Mousse, pickled cucumbers and red pepper vanilla bean dressing,  I liked it, it was a refreshing summer dish, but I can’t say I was wowed by it. We also ordered the Maryland Crab Cakes, the Shrimp and calamari as starters .

2nd Course: I ordered the Pan-roasted day Boat Halibut with wild mushroom ragu, truffle potato puree, and crispy leeks.

My cousin ordered the Seafood Fettucine w/Truffle Cream, lobster, scallops, shrimp, and crab.

My daughter’s entree was the Roasted Murray Chicken w/ Garden Herbs, potato puree, summer vegetables, marjoram Jus.

We liked the appetizers but we did not love them, we thought each dish tasted bland but we were pleasantly pleased with the entrees because each dish was delicious, well seasoned and full of flavor.  We each loved what we ordered and everyone tasted the other dishes and loved them. The halibut with the with wild mushroom ragu was delicious, the Chicken was succulent but the Seafood Fettuccine w/Truffle Cream with lobster, scallops, shrimp, and crab was incredible and my personal favorite.

As we finished our dinner the show was about to start, Konstantin Soukhovetski stopped by our table to say hello, we were fascinated with his Bespoke Swarovski Strass Shoes which he designs. This summer he is performing his “In His Shoes” on an Acrylic baby grand air piano, Thursday’s evenings until the end of August at Claudes.

Konstantin is an amazing Rock Star Pianist,” his one-man show, titled In His Shoes, Konstantin performs his own versions of the popular hits of Madonna, Celine Dion, and other iconic artists as well as a collection of stories from his international career and his experience as a Russian-American coming of age in NYC. My favorite was his rendition of Evita.

Dinner, of course, is not complete without dessert and we were not disappointed. We ordered three desserts but my personal favorite was the caramelized banana tart w/Nutella center, miso butterscotch, and coconut gelato. It was hot and heavenly.

Overall, we had a beautiful dining experience at Claude’s, the Prix fix with a cabaret show with delightful, something different in the Hamptons. The ambiance was aesthetically pleasing, the service was impeccable and attentive, the food was delicious and the entertainment was a perfect ending to a beautiful night out. Going out to eat is a treat and as such, you would like to have a fantastic dining experience, but a dining experience is not just about the good food there are other factors that complete the experience. Good Food, Ambiance, Service and topped off with entrainment makes for a good evening.

Sag Harbor, Sag Harbor Hills 2018 –Sagkanda by the seaThe 7th annual summer kick-off party and fundraiser was fun and I was happy to be part of the celebration. Summer attire was  Wakanda inspired ( Dashikis and Caftans). Everyone had fun with the Wakanda attire, it was great to see almost 100% participation. I even got in the grove with my Wakanda summer caftan. Unfortunately, I was so busy taking photos I am not sure anyone got a picture of me in my beautiful caftan.

Sag Harbor: One of the vendors that I really liked was Christy Creations, her beautiful collection of hand-painted bags were beautiful. Christine is a multi-talented award-winning artist from St. Lucian who has earned recognition for her impressive skills in different artistic genres. Her products are individually crafted, hand-painted and fashioned into a guaranteed original one-of-a-kind. I cannot wait to sport the original bag I purchased.

Sag Harbor is so rich in History, especially black history. Many African Americans bought property in Sag Harbor after the 2nd World war but they were limited to specific Neighborhoods, Sag Harbor Hills, Ninevah and Azurest, Eastville and Chatfield’s Hill. These Lots were cheap,  so many paid with cash since loans were not available at that time. Many of the homes were small, if you walk through the neighborhood today you might still find some of the originally built homes. The character is, however, changing with many new homeowners building bigger homes, developers pressuring homeowners to sell and they subsequently combining the lots to build mega-mansions.

Thank You Sag Harbor Hills for inviting me to your 7th Annual Summer Kick-off, I had a great time and it was nice seeing everyone. I look forward to seeing everyone at the annual Labor Day Races and the end of summer party. Have a wonderful summer.

Bridgehampton, NY: Bobby Vans Crab Salad

I am in love with this Crab salad at Bobby Vans in Bridgehampton, I have ordered it 3 times in the last 2 weeks and each time it has tasted exactly the same as the first time. I love the consistency of good food. I often find a lack of consistency in the Hamptons during the summer season. I am not sure why perhaps because of the influx of people during the summer. It is very rare that I make the effort to dine out in the Hamptons during the summer, but when I do I want that dining experience, good food, and amazing service.

This salad hit all of my taste buds, it includes avocado, bacon, lumps of real crabmeat, lettuce, shredded carrots, yellow tomatoes and wontons for a crunch, topped off with a delicious homemade dressing. I was pleasantly pleased and it left me wanting more and daydreaming about the next time I would have it. My only hope is when I return I will have the same dining experience. The service was wonderful, the atmosphere was enjoyable and it was not a long wait for our food to arrive. It was the perfect dining experience for a beautiful lunch with my hubby on a summer Monday afternoon in the Hamptons. I might add it was not over the top expensive.

I am a fan of Bobby Vans because I have always had a wonderful dining experience in many of the locations I have visited. I remember dining at an NYC location a couple of years ago with my daughter and we had a food experience that literally put us in a food coma.

Next time you are in Bridgehampton stop there for lunch I also recommend the SWEET CHILI TOSSED CALAMARI, the calamari was tender and the sweet chili sauce gave it a pop. OMG, it was so delicious.

Hamptons Recreation: The Hamptons seasonal bicyclist are out, share the road. It has been a long cold winter and I for one am so excited to welcome the warm weather. Bike riding in the Hamptons has always been a favorite activity but now that we are quickly approaching the official start of the Hamptons season I thought it would be a good idea to go over some safe bike riding rules. It is unfortunate that there are not many roads in the Hamptons that have bike lanes and therefore Bikers, Drivers, Runners, Walkers and animals must share the road.turkey crossing the road

Many accidents that occur are usually with bicyclist and drivers who do not respect each others space, so let’s try to avoid these unfortunate and preventable accidents this summer. If you know of anyone who has recently got caught up in a bike accident, you may want to Click Here for more information. I’m sure they can do with all the help they can get in a situation like this.

Drivers and cyclists can work together to improve road safety through shared awareness, patience, courtesy and cooperation. Those who are involved in a bicycle accident in South Carolina could consider getting legal help from Bike Accident attorneys in North Myrtle Beach like those at the Jebaily Law Firm. Casual riding

Bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as any other driver of a vehicle, as is often noted by a Bicycle Accident Attorney when contacted. While a driver’s license is not required to ride a bike, bicyclists are required to know and obey all traffic laws such as stopping at stop signs and traffic lights and signaling before turning or changing lanes. Bicyclists should never, under any circumstances, ride against traffic.

A high percentage of all car/bike collisions result from cyclists going the wrong way. Stay to the right if you are moving slower than other traffic, maintain a constant position in the lane about three feet away from the curb or parked cars. Do not weave in and out of parked cars. Maintaining a presence on the road will help drivers see you and will reduce the chance that motor vehicles will pull in front of you. If lanes are too narrow to share with motor vehicles,?the safest place to ride your bicycle is in the middle of the lane. If the lanes become wider, move over to the far right side again.

Rules for Bicycles

Bicycles are the most vulnerable of all vehicles on the road, and extra safety precautions should always be taken when riding. Driving on roads requires care and courtesy whether you are driving a car or a bicycle. As road users, bicyclists must be predictable and highly visible; often drivers of vehicles have a difficult time seeing bicyclists in traffic. The following are some tips to help bicyclists Share the Road with vehicles.

  • Obey all traffic laws. Ride with traffic, obey stop signs, traffic lights and other traffic controls. Bicyclists do best when they act and are treated as drivers of vehicles.
  • Be aware of surrounding traffic, especially when riding in traffic with large trucks and buses that make wide right turns. Don’t sneak in between vehicles, and never assume that drivers see bicyclists or hand signals.
  • Ride with traffic. Ride on the right side, with the flow of traffic. Riding against traffic may cause you to miss traffic control devices, such as traffic signs and stop lights. Be especially careful when riding near or around trucks.
  • Be careful when riding too close to a large truck. Large trucks have blind spots in the front, back and on the sides, which make it difficult for drivers to see around them. If you’re involved in an accident with a truck then you may want to get in touch with lawyers like those of Valiente Mott to help you deal with the fallout of the incident if it has led to you suffering medically or financially.
  • Be visible and predictable. Wear bright colors, ride straight, signal before changing directions, and plan ahead to avoid obstacles.

Rules for Motorists

Driving on roads requires care whether you are driving a car or a bicycle. Motorists must respect the rights of other road users including bicyclists. Do your part by being a safe and courteous driver. The following are tips to help drivers Share the Road with bicyclists:

  • Allow three feet of passing space between the right side of your vehicle and a bicyclist just as you would with a slow-moving vehicle. Maintain this distance even if there are designated bike lanes.
  • Do not pass bicyclists if you will be making a right turn immediately afterward. Always assume bicyclists are traveling through the intersection.
  • Before opening your car door, look for bicyclists who may be approaching.
  • Do NOT pass bicyclists if oncoming traffic is near. Wait as you would with any slow-moving vehicle.
  • Reduce your speed when passing bicyclists, especially if the roadway is narrow.
  • Don’t blast your horn when approaching bicyclists – you could startle them and cause an accident.

Give bicyclists adequate space to maneuver. Recognize situations and obstacles which may be hazardous to cyclists, such as potholes, debris, and drain grates.

Special thanks to MARC for this information.

Bicyclist it is important to also pay attention to the rules about riding your bike down Main Street in most towns. I know in Sag Harbor you cannot ride your bike in Town, so bring a lock to park your bike if you would like to browse or have a bite to eat. Although many towns are safe there are still dishonest people everywhere.sag harbor main street
