Hamptons Happenings: News around Town

There are so many new things happening in the Hamptons…much has been in the news already, but then there are the lingering rumors that have been circulating and little birdies have shed some light on those rumors that seem to plague small towns.

SAG HARBOR

Harbor Market in Sag Harbor…I was originally told they were planning on opening in late February. I stopped by last week and I see that progress is moving quickly on the total rebuild inside and it looks beautiful. There are some issues that need to be resolved with the village and the neighbors, so unfortunately it looks more like an April opening. I can wait they will have artisan brick oven pizza….yummy…(.hint…hint butternut squash with pancetta and fresh mozzarella)

Doppio Sag Harbor….I have asked repeatedly are they re-opening in Sag Harbor and my source assures me they are coming back. It has been rumored that they have not received approval for a brick oven or outdoor seating. I am anxious to see what happens with them this summer. I was really hoping when they took over they would maintain the Madison & Main crowd, but sadly that did not happen.
Ideal Stationary.….after years on Main Street, owners have decided to retire and close up the store. Since they own the property they will leasing and it has been rumored that Henry Lehr will be moving into that spot. Henry Lehr currently has a location on Newtown Lane in East Hampton, are they closing that location or opening up a second location in Sag Harbor. I called to get a response but I was told “no response”….hmmmm it is a wait and see for now…..
The vacant space that once occupied the Village Cleaners 3 years ago….has been cleared out and I was told today that a new business is moving in April 1st 2015. It has been rumored that Shoe-Inn might be opening up a spot in Sag Harbor Village, I called to get some information from Shoe-Inn corporate and I was told we “have no comment”…hmmm is that a YES….Guess I will have to wait until April 1st to see who’s moving in.
Pepalajefa the gourmet take-out has closed their doors for good and that space is available for rent. Does this surprise anyone that they are closing? The name was complicated to pronounce and the food was over the top expensive.
Harlow in the Harbor: Contrary to the rumors being spread, they will be re-opening this Spring and “Back Harlow” will be back with some great bands. Looking forward to seeing what is on the menu this summer. I enjoyed “Back Harlow very much last year, entertaining and FUN, just what was lacking in the Harbor. I wonder who’s in the line-up for entertainment this summer

Copious Row an online store in opening in Sag Harbor this Spring 2015 with rare and specialized items that are not commonly found. Looks like the Sag Harbor Pharmacy might be getting some competition in the area soon, more info to come on that soon….

Provisions:will be sporting a new look this season….They have been under renovation since the 14th of March and will be re-opening on March 25th. Can’t wait to see the new look.

Word on the street is that the new tenant in the former Georgica space is Bridgehampton Italian stalwart Osteria Salina.

Scarpetta, will be opening in Montauk, Long Island this summer, according to Eater. LDV Hospitality will be taking over the restaurant located at Gurney’s Inn in Montauk.

Hamptons Eats: Winston’s is spicing up Nichol’s space

Winston’s will be opening March 22nd in the space formally known as Nichol’s in East Hampton. Winton Lyons the new owner and executive chef, previously worked at Turtle Bay Crossing, The Meeting House and most recently known for his talented culinary skills at the East Hampton Grill. Winston left the East Hampton Grill in 2013 and has been preparing to open up his own restaurant. The Theme will be seafood/steak with a Caribbean touch. Although Winston is Jamaican you will not find Caribbean dishes dominating the menu, however Sunday evenings will be Caribbean dinner night. Winston tells me that people from all over come rave about his steak, I am looking forward to tasting it. I asked Winston what will make Winston’s unique and he said his primarily focus will be on service, standard and quality of the food, some signature dishes like Fried Lobster and Roasted Garlic Crabmeat.

Things that go bump in the Road…Will the Pot Holes in Hamptons in 2015 be worst than 2014?

We can only pray that we are finished with snow for this winter season. I estimate that we are close to 40inches of snow so far this winter season. Many people have had pipes burst and have been without water, but companies like https://sharpplumbing.com/water-heater-needs-repair/ are working overtime to try and get round to everyone in need of help. Workers have been working non-stop plowing and sanding roads since January 27th, since the first snow storm of 2015 with nearly 30 inches of snow on that day. I am sure many of them are ready for a much needed rest, but on the positive many were employed for the winter season and we could be in Boston.

The question on everyone’s mind is will we be drowning in Potholes for 2015 like we were for 2014? Sag Harbor has some really bad roads, but not as bad as East Hampton. I was out driving this morning on Noyac Road, some areas were challenging but I found Route 114 going towards East Hampton to be really bad. I thought for sure I would damage my car. I am told that there are horrible horrible horrible pot holes on Noyac between Morton Wildlife and Millstone. How are the roads in your towns Montauk, Amagansett, Springs, Sagaponack, Bridgehampton, Watermill, Southampton, Hampton Bays, Quogue, East Quogue, Remsenburg, Speonk, Westhampton?

This year’s roads are especially treacherous for drivers because this winter has been a particularly brutal one, with frequent snow since January 27th, ice, and frigid temperatures giving way to brief thaws, before the cycle repeats again. The fluctuation in temperature between the daytime and the evening, paired with all that ice and snow, are “wreaking havoc on the roads in the Hamptons”. Heavy traffic takes a greater toll on the roads, and heavy truck traffic an even greater toll combined with some of these roads at the end of their lifespan, causes the potholes. Sometimes they can cause some serious damage to your car or truck. Luckily there are some good repair services out there, some of which operate 24 hours a day. (Similar to this repair company: https://fergusontruckcenter.com/houston-commercial-truck-repair/) Hopefully, you drive slowly enough to miss them, but sometimes they do catch you at the last second.

Who is responsible for fixing the roads, and will there be enough funds to fix the roads this Spring? I suggest you contact the D.O.T. (Department of Transportation) in your area to report potholes in your area, put them on alert. You have a greater chance of those potholes getting fixed sooner than later.

New State toll-free number for state operated roads. – 800-POTHOLE….Until then, slow down when driving over a pothole. We are only at the beginning of March so don’t go celebrating yet, March has a way of continuing to surprise us, so we will pray for no more snow, but lets be prepared just in case “Mother Nature” decides to throw us a curve ball..
