Expect delays on the LIRR Montauk Branch week of 3/12/13 …Greeting Hamptons Mouthpiece readers…Last week we were informed that County Road 39 would be closed in Southampton in the evenings for 2-3 days March 12-15th 2013 7pm-5am, for road repair. The LIRR released  this information on their website that there would be some changes on the Montauk branch and buses will replace trains from Speonk to Montauk for 72 Hours from Tuesday, March 12 thru Friday, March 15, 2013, for Bridge Rehab Work . The Latest Phase of $22.4M Project of rehabilitation of the three east end Bridges which includes AM & PM Peak Outages.

With train service suspended along this segment of the Montauk Branch, the LIRR will take advantage of the track time to reconstruct the railroad crossing on Montauk Highway near Flying Point Road to accommodate future plans of the Town of Southampton to widen Montauk Highway. As a result, Montauk Highway will be closed to vehicular traffic at that juncture on Tuesday, March 12 and Wednesday, March 13.

Add 40 minutes to your commute in the morning for commuters from Montauk-Speonk if you need to take to bus that will be replacing the trains this week or you can carpool with some of your train buddies and drive to Speonk in the morning to avoid this craziness. Here is your schedule for this week on the Montauk branch.

Greetings Hamptons Mouthpiece readers…Our popular book store BookHampton says goodbye to Sag Harbor for awhile…I saw a sign posted on the window and so I stopped in the store today March 10th to inquire what was going on. I was told that BookHampton was leaving its current space on Main Street because the space was too big. They are seeking another smaller space on Main Street in Sag Harbor but currently they have not found one and are left without a home. While they wait to find a home in Sag Harbor,  you can visit the other locations in East Hampton and Southampton. Online Book StoreIt really does not surprise me that they are seeking a smaller space and downsizing, the increase of  the E-book, Kindle and the iPad are dominating the market and possibly decreasing the book sales. Are more people reading on their electronic devices? The other obstacle that small local bookstores like BookHampton face are the online bookstores like Amazon, Barnes & Noble and a variety of other deep discounted online bookstores. It might be increasingly difficult for bookstores to be able to compete with online cost, at least that is what Julie Bosman from the New York Times says in an article she wrote titled “The Bookstore’s Last Stand”

Jeffrey A. Trachtenberg of the Wall Street journal reports that sales of print books  have declined 22% since 2008. Some suggest that sales of print in stores have fallen more than that. Where do customers go when their favorite local book store closes, they turn to online purchasing because it is the more convenient option left for these customers.

As for me personally I am torn, I  enjoy reading books on my ipad, and I also order books online at Amazon, however I do enjoy going to BookHampton because they are local and they display suggested books from local authors. I love the customer service that you can only get in a bookstore and I love when they have visiting authors. I am sad BookHampton is leaving the village right now and I look forward to their return to the village because they do complete Main Street in Sag Harbor.

autism awareness-ribbon-in-brig-26879726April is Autism Awareness month …last year 2012 the Flying Point Foundation for Autism along with Southampton Hospital and Suffolk County Department of Emergency Medical Service offered a free workshop called Autism Awareness for the First Responder. It was so well-received they are doing it again this year on April 6, 2013 Free Workshop Interacting with Individuals with Autism at Hampton Bays Middle School. First responders will receive credit toward mandatory professional training.

This year they have expanded the day to include an afternoon session geared toward law enforcement, security and school support personnel (security, food service, transportation, aides).

The presenter is the father of a child with autism/Downs. He’s an EMT, firefighter and the course was developed in Massachusetts by another firefighter/father of a child with autism and it was featured last year on The Today Show. Doctors and nurses would most certainly benefit from this course, as well as office staff etc.

3rd Annual Katy’s Courage 5K 2013: Greetings Hamptons MouthPiece Readers…Saturday, April 13th will be the 3rd Annual Katy’s Courage 5K run in Sag Harbor,  Kathryn Collins Stewart a 12 year old who lost her battle to a rare form of liver cancer in December 2010, but not before she captured the hearts of so many in our community.

Last year during the 2nd Annual Katy’s Courage 5k run in Sag Harbor, oh… what a chilly day it was. Sun lit, cool and windy was the call of the day but it could not dampen the wonderful turnout of supporters from attending this extraordinary event. The crowd was energenic and motivated to participate in the run. Cheeks were rosy, gloves were on but the runners were prepared. Once again, Sag Harbor was at it’s best as the support for a worthy cause was presented and represented by EVERYONE! Thanks Katy, for inspiring us to try to match your courage, grit and indomitable spirit in fulfilling your mission to help others. We love you Katy!

Join Katy’s Parents, brother, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, Sag Harbor Family and tons of friends for the 3rd Annual 5k in Sag Harbor…you can run or walk, bring the kids, the dog, whatever suits your fancy…Hamptons MouthPiece will be out there and we hope to see you.

DIRECTIONS TO THE REGISTRATION AREA:21 Water Street
Coming into Sag Harbor, go down Main Street almost to the end (the water), at the round-about, go around as if you were going to make a u-turn, but instead of a complete u-turn,  veer to the right – that’s Water Street.  Go past the Post Office, and just beyond the Beacon Restaurant on the right is an open area.  That’s where registration will take place.
Kathryn, who was known as “Katy” to family and friends, succumbed to hepatoblastoma with her family by her side. The lifelong Sag Harbor resident had been battling the disease since 2009. All proceeds go directly to Katy’ s Courage Fund, set up by Katy’s Family. Katy’s Courage Fund, is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to education and support for families and children through scholarships, support for counseling, and pediatric cancer research.
