Scholarships to be Awarded at the Stony Hill Stables Foundation Annual Benefit
Saturday, June 30, 2018, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Special Dressage Exhibition & Pony Drill Team Performance

Stony Hill Stables, owned and operated by the Hotchkiss family for more than five decades, will host the annual Stony Hill Stables Foundation Benefit on Saturday, June 30, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. on the pastoral grounds of Stony Hill Stables, located in Amagansett on Town Lane. The Stony Hill Stables Foundation, a not-for-profit organization created to promote equine sports through riding education and competitive opportunities for children and young adults in the East End community, continues to be the only stable in Long Island to offer this unique scholarship program.

Now in its seventh year, the scholarship program is on sound footing and has given local riders a path to their equestrian dreams. With a grass-roots approach, the scholarship program has opened its barn doors to local kids. Scholarships are customized to suit each recipient, and each recipient participates in creating his or her own program, based on the budget of their scholarship, and their individual goals and interests.

Event Chairwoman, Bailey Thompson, who currently trains with Stony Hill Stables owner and USDF Gold Medalist, Wick Hotchkiss, has been involved with the foundation since its inception. “For the past six years I have had the privilege to serve on the Benefit Committee where I have witnessed the amazing mission of the foundation come to fruition. I am honored to be named the 2018 event Chair. This foundation is very special to me because I understand how significant these scholarships are and the great opportunities they provide to the recipients,” said Ms. Thompson.

Stony Hill Stables prides itself with offering a safe, educational, and positive environment for equestrians of all ages to learn and grow. “I have been lucky to ride at Stony Hill since I began my riding career at the age of seven. I, along with many others, have learned so many tangible and intangible life lessons and skills that go beyond the stables; an experience that not many people may get in their lifetime,” said event Chair Thompson, “I am extremely proud to be part of a program that provides local children the opportunity to reap the benefits of our wonderful sport. I couldn’t be more honored to further this hallmark tradition”.

This year’s annual family-friendly event promises to be full of surprises. Scholarship students as well as Grand Prix riders will take to the ring. Bailey Thompson and USDF Gold Medalist Wick Hotchkiss with perform Dressage, the Stony Hill Stable’s Pony Drill Team will delight attendees with a specially choreographed performance, and there will even be an exhilarating Jumping Exhibition!

Scholarship applications for the 2018 season are currently being accepted. Five to seven scholarships will be awarded annually. Local residents of Montauk, Amagansett, East Hampton, Sag Harbor and Southampton are encouraged to apply. Scholarship applications are available on-line at https://www.stonyhillstables.com/foundation.

Deadline for submitting applications is June 22, 2018. Scholarship winners will be announced on June 30 at the Stony Hill Stables Foundation Benefit!

Tickets for the Stony Hill Stables Foundation Benefit are priced at $125 for a single ticket, $200 for a couple. Children under 12 are free! Tickets can be purchased in advance on-line. The Sag Harbor chamber of Commerce is hosting The 6th Annual HARBORFROST February 27TH 2016in Sag Harbor, New York. Who’s ready to get your freeze on for the Frosty Plunge? A benefit for the Sag Harbor Ambulance Corp.
Registration at the Windmill Beach at noon on Saturday, February 27, 100% of the $20 entrance fee will benefit the Sag Harbor Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

HarborFrost is an Ice Sculpting and Fireworks Spectacular staged in beautiful Sag Harbor over one magical weekend in February. The annual event has become a favorite with locals and visitors alike—a fun “Winter Break” with activities for the whole family.

The Topping Rose House in Bridgehampton, NY will generously host a Holiday Charity Event to help families in need this holiday season. The Event will benefit both the New York City No Kid Hungry campaign and the Bridgehampton Child Care and Recreational Center.

Few dancers make it to the highest levels of classical ballet. Of that small number, only a fraction of them are black women. Misty Copeland succeeded in pulling herself up from the studio company at American Ballet Theater to the corps de ballet and then to soloist. In 2013 she was offered the lead role in Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird to be performed at New York’s Metropolitan Opera House, a major coup for a soloist. While she danced beautifully that night, she performed in great pain. Afterwards she was found to have six fractures in her left shin that required corrective surgery. This film follows the ballerina’s painful road back to dancing.

Nelson George is an author, filmmaker, television producer and critic with a long career in analyzing and presenting the diverse elements of African-American culture. Nelson has been on a roll since 2013 with the following completed documentary projects: VH1 Rock Docs’ Finding the Funk; Showtime’s Brooklyn Boheme; ESPN’s The Announcement; and the short All Hail the Beat, for the Focus Forward campaign.

Modern Tide: Midcentury Architecture seeks to highlight some of the region’s best work as a way to bring awareness and appreciation for such architectural achievements. The film explores the work of the region’s best postwar architects and designers, including Albert Fey, Frank Lloyd Wright, Marcel Breuer, Andrew Geller, Philip Johnson, Charles Gwathmey and others.

Hamptons Teen :The Future is bright for the Lady Whalers Field Hockey Team
The Pierson-Bridgehampton Lady Whalers were defeated on Saturday, November 14, 2015 by the Cazenovia Lakers. The 2-1 score was indicative of the tightly contested game; only finally settled in the second half. Cazenovia scored their first goal after a penalty stroke was awarded to the Lakers due to an infraction of the rules by a Lady Whaler. The penalty shot just escaped the outstretched leg of the goalie, Freshman Charlotte Johnson and the goal was scored by Cazenovia player, Zoe Shephard. 1-0, Cazenovia.

The Whalers came back to tie the score 1-1 at 23:50, at the beginning of the second half on a goal by Sophomore, Claudia Patterson. This was Patterson’s first career goal and it couldn’t have come at a better time. There was a very physical scrum in the goal area but Patterson successfully scored.

Cazenovia showed their championship pedigree by forcing the Whalers into multiple corner penalties in the first half. The Whalers successfully defended these corners and some credit must be given to Junior, Allura Leggard for disrupting the corner offensive sets of the Lakers by flying out with impressive speed. The Whalers played excellent team defense preventing goal after goal as the Lakers applied constant offensive pressure.

The Whaler’s however, have a championship pedigree too and Junior, Ana Sherwood was incredible, showing her grit, determination and skill by moving the ball up the field against a determined Cazenovia defense. Sherwood attempted some shots on goal but the Cazenovia defenders were determined to prevent any uncontested shots. Sherwood and Leggard are Captains and they lead their team by example. Not to be outdone, Senior, Kerrie Vila, the third Whaler Captain was fantastic in defense from the sweeper position. She incredibly defended a shot headed toward the goal that was shot from the right side at a difficult angle. This kept the second half score tied going into the final 7 minutes of the game. Vila was a very active defender in what would turn out to be her final game as a Whaler.

Goalie, Charlotte Johnson was at it again, giving her body up defending the goal. She showed no hesitation to dive at shots making save after save. Unfortunately the Whaler’s season would be determined by a goal by Cazenovia Laker, Zoe Shephard with 7:10 seconds left in the second half. The whalers appeared stunned for a moment but they quickly regrouped and for the remainder of the game, applied constant pressure on Cazenovia setting up some shots on goal by Freshman, Hollie Schleicher, Sherwood and Junior Calista Cafiero until the final second.

The Whalers were emotional but proud in defeat. This is a very young team with only one Senior starter graduating; so the future is bright. First year, Head coach, Bethany Semlear is looking forward to next year’s championship campaign.
